Frequently Asked Questions

General / Technical Queries

Coin Related Queries

Q. Can I also bid by touchtone telephone? Yes, you can also bid using your same login and password by automated touchtone telephone. For more information about bidding by telephone, please click here.

Q. What browser should I use to view the Teletrade® site? While we make every attempt to accommodate all browsers, Teletrade® works best with Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer, versions 3.0 or higher. Other browsers will function just fine, with some loss of formatting.

Q. What speed modem is necessary for viewing the Teletrade® site? For reasonable response, especially when viewing coin images, we suggest a 14,400 baud or faster modem.

Q. Why do the pages seem to take a long time to load?

  1. Modem speed: The speed of your modem is usually the greatest limiting factor for internet access. Those of you with a more direct internet connection, perhaps through an institutional account, will experience much faster response.
  2. Internet Routing: The internet is an extremely complicated series of data connections, any one of which affect the speed of your connection. From your ISP's connection all the way down to the major internet backbones, there are many opportunities for problems. These are usually temporary delays, however.
  3. Teletrade® user traffic: Because our auctions close at 10:00pm, there is the tendency for users to come into the site at the last minute to monitor and bid. If a large number of people come to our site at once, this can tax both our system and the surrounding internet resources. This may result in a significant slowdown for all users. To avoid this situation, we suggest using our maximum bidding feature to let our system manage your individual bids for you. In addition, you can use our Toll-Free Telephone bidding system at 800-332-5040 as an alternate way to use our auctions.
  4. Long searches: Some searches take a long time, especially ones that involve searching for keywords. If a search is too complicated or is performed at a time when many other people are using the system, you may be given an error. In this case, try to limit the number of auctions searched, or try again later.

Q. How secure is the Teletrade® site?
This site uses SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Encryption to send and receive your identity. Your user ID and password are never transmitted over the internet without encrypting it first.

The highest exposure risk is actually with your browser: If you fail to logout from the site and leave your computer, someone else can access the site and pose as you. This could result in violations ranging from retrieving your account information to bidding on lots using your identity. Please logout or quit all of your browser windows when you are done with our site. You can always quickly login again and resume where you left off.

Q. How come the login page, and most other pages, are not in "Secure" mode? The login page itself is not secure. When you submit your name and password, they are securely sent to a secured confirmation page.

Most other pages on this site are not secure. Once we know who you are, we no longer need secure mode, since we are not openly transmitting your user ID and password across the internet. Anybody hacking your internet connection may see what you are doing, but they won't know who you are. We have chosen NOT to secure our entire web site because this would slow access tremendously.

Q. What is a Cookie and why does your site need them? Cookies are a greatly misunderstood mechanism of the web. They simply allow a web site to send your browser an ID code, so that when you view other pages from the same web site, the web site can tell it's still you. They do not release any private information about you. You alone would have to do that yourself, by typing information into a form and submitting it.

Without cookies, a web site would not know you were still the same person as you moved from page to page. While this worked fine for when the web was just a place to retrieve documents, it doesn't work if you're trying to bid in an auction, keep a shopping cart, or otherwise interact with the user.

The web site of Teletrade® uses cookies to remember your login information so you don't have to enter it on every registered-user page. We also use cookies to allow you to build a list of lots to track and keep some personal preferences. Additionally, cookies are used to track new users coming from banner ads, so that we can see which ads are producing results.

Almost all browsers allow you to view all of the cookies you are keeping, and some allow you to selectively delete cookies that you don't want. This illustrates the non-threatening nature of cookies. There is nothing secret and nothing to hide.

If you set your browser to reject cookies, you will be severely limiting your ability to interact with most web sites.

Q. How do I receive information about other Teletrade® auctions? Select Bidding Info or Selling Info from the Main Home Page. From there you are able to access help topics related to all of our auction types.

Q. Why is Teletrade® a good place to buy and sell certified coins?
There are several reasons why Teletrade® is a good place to buy and sell:

  1. Teletrade® has been in business since 1986. We have enjoyed growing support over that time. We have learned that the most important factor in our success is the satisfaction of our consignors and buyers. Talk to them. Listen to what they say. They are our strongest recommendation.
  2. We are a substantial company upon which you can rely. With a staff of over 50 and growing consistently, Teletrade® has earned the industry's trust. Whether you are a buyer or seller, we won't let you down.
  3. Teletrade® describes all its lots accurately and honestly. We don't want you to have to return a lot. We want you to be satisfied. We do our best so that when people ask you about Teletrade® the comments you make will be positive.
  4. Teletrade® offers a no questions asked return privilege.
  5. For sellers, Teletrade® pays promptly and offers a generous cash advance program.
  6. We work hard to put your lots into auction promptly. To expand our auction capacity, Teletrade® has moved to a larger facility and added more communication lines to our computer.
  7. For buyers, we guarantee that you will get the lots which you have bid on and won. Every lot in a Teletrade® sale is physically in our possession. Because we have the lots we guarantee to deliver the lots upon receipt of your payment.
  8. For sellers, we guarantee that you will be paid for a lot which is sold and released to the buyer. If we have a financial problem with the buyer after the lot is released, and the lot is not returned promptly, we protect you against financial loss.
  9. Our state-of-the-art auction system integrates real time bidding (at this site) with telephone bidding (over toll-free 800 lines) allowing 100% participation. Participants do not need a computer or access to the Internet to participate is our auctions.

To summarize, the principles guiding Teletrade® are those of honesty, fair dealing and customer responsiveness. They have worked for Teletrade® since 1986 and they will continue to guide our actions in the future.

Q. If I buy a coin through Teletrade® what will it cost me? Buyers are charged a buyer's fee based on the price realized at auction. The fee is calculated per lot according to the Teletrade® Buyer's Fee Schedule. In addition, buyers will pay postage and handling charges according to the Postage and Handling Fee Schedule.

Q. What if I buy a coin through Teletrade® and I want to return it?Teletrade® offers a no-questions-asked return privilege subject to our standard terms and conditions. A buyer can return any lot purchased if it is sent back to Teletrade® within seven days of our shipment (buyer's postmark must be within seven days of the date Teletrade® shipped the package). The return privilege is voided if payment was sent late.

Q. How do I know if I won a lot in a Teletrade® auction? Teletrade® does not mail invoices. Therefore, bidders are required to check their results. Results are available at the "Account Info" portion of our web site 30 minutes after the auction has ended. You may also obtain your results by calling the bidding line (800-332-5040) 15 minutes after the auction of the auction until midnight (Eastern) by simply entering your ID code. To get this information from the bidding line after the day of the auction, you must select "Customer Service" and then option 1 and the auction number when asked.

Q. How do I bid in a Teletrade® auction? Bidding is available at our web site and by telephone over toll-free 800 lines. Detailed bidding instructions are available under "Bidding Info".

Population: At the end of some descriptions Teletrade® gives population information. For example: 4/16 means that four coins have been graded in this grade (total) by ANACS, NGC and PCGS with 16 coins graded higher. These are approximate population figures. Population figures are updated monthly. Newly certified coins received by Teletrade® may not be included.

Bulk/Dealer Lots: The number in parenthesis before the coin indicates the total number of coins in a lot. For example: (4) 1923 NGC 64. The price bid is for the entire lot (in this case four coins).

Teletrade® Prices Realized: Where available, we show the last five realizations in that grade (and the grade higher) on the lot page. Q. What are the and icons that appear in listings? These price history icons appear in our listings when there are lots of similar type and grade to the listed lot. If you're viewing a live or upcoming auction, the (paper scroll and dollar sign) icon indicates there are one or more similar lots previously sold at Teletrade®. By clicking on the icon, a list of those matching lots will appear, providing you with a price history reference.

Similarly, the appearance of a (stopwatch and gavel) icon in our Prices Realized and Price Guide sections will alert you to similar lots that are coming up for auction.

Q. What do the Rainbow and Toned coin designations mean? A Rainbow toned coin is one which shows at least three well defined Rainbow tones on one or both sides of a coin. These tones can be in any arrangement and at least three must be visible.

Rainbow colors are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

Coins which do not have these colors or just two of these colors with any other shade of tan, brown, gold (other than yellow-golden) or russet are classed as Toned. Also, any of these single colors will be classed as toned.

Q. How do I consign certified coins To Teletrade®? Send any number of coins with a total minimum value of $1,000 to Teletrade®'s Auction Center at 18061 Fitch, Irvine, CA 92614-6018. Include a copy of our consignment form with your coins. You can print a consignment form like this one.
Under normal circumstances, coins will be auctioned two to four weeks after we receive them. Prior to auction, you will receive an inventory report by mail and e-mail stating in which auctions your coins are scheduled and what lot numbers they have been assigned.

Q. What are Teletrade®'s consignment policies for certified coins? You may consign to Teletrade® any coin certified and encapsulated by ANACS, ICG, NGC, or PCGS. Our full consignment policies are available under Selling Info.

Q. If I sell a coin through Teletrade® what will it cost me? Consignors are charged a seller's fee based on the price realized at auction. The fee is calculated per lot according to the Teletrade® Seller's Fee Schedule.

Q. When will Teletrade® auction my consignment?  Teletrade® reserves the right to place coins in whichever auction it feels is most appropriate. Coins from a single consignment may be assigned to more than one auction. Under normal circumstances, coins will be auctioned two to four weeks after we receive them.

Q. When will I get paid for my consignment? Payment is mailed 36 days after the auction to consignors.

Q. Can I get a cash advance from Teletrade®?  Teletrade® offers "Fast Cash" advances to qualified consignors. We recognize that consignors often require working capital to take advantage of buying opportunities or want to receive anticipated sales proceeds sooner. So, we have created a fast, trouble free program to meet these needs.
Because Teletrade®'s coin auctions are so frequent, consignors who use our advance program typically have advances outstanding for very short periods of time. This reduces the cost of the advance to the consignor.
We require a minimum $10,000 value consignment. For further information about advances, contact Irma Kane at 800-949-2646.

Q. Can I place a reserve or a minimum on a coin I have consigned for auction?  Teletrade® does not place or execute minimums or reserves on behalf of consignors. Consignors are permitted to bid on their own coins, but they must do so by placing Buyback bids no later than one hour before the auction begins (see Maximum Bidding instructions to enter your Buyback bids). Consignors will be charged only the seller's fee based on their full Buyback bid on any lots bought back in this manner. Please note: Consignors cannot place bids on their own lots during the auction.
All coins bought back are shipped to the consignor within five days of the auction. A $15 handling fee applies per shipment. If a coin receives no bid above our opening price, no fee is charged for the coin in that auction and it will be recycled into the next available auction.

Q. What if the buyer returns a lot from my consignment to Teletrade®? If any coin is returned by a buyer it is usually offered in the next available auction. However, Teletrade® reserves the right to return it to the consignor within 36 days of the auction. Coins that are returned three times are sent back to the consignor.
