Teletrade® to sell Binion VAMS as highlight of October 27 Silver Dollar Auction

Approximately 600 coins will be auctioned by Teletrade® in a special VAM auction to be held on October 27th, 2002 as a highlight of their Silver Dollar Auction. The coins were certified with a unique green label holder and design to distinguish the Binion Collection pedigree. Following the tremendous success of the Binion toned Rainbow coins in March and July of 2002, Teletrade® is offering the VAM Silver Dollars as a featured and final part of its Binion offerings. Teletrade® is the exclusive online auctioneer both of the Binion Toned Rainbow Coins and the Binion VAM Silver Dollar Collection.

VAM is an acronym for Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis, the authors of The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars. Noted author, VAM specialist, and President of RCI, inc., Dr. Michael Fey has seen all of the VAM coins and has assisted in the identification and sorting of the Binion VAMs.

Best of the Binion VAMS

By far, the rarest Top 100 Binion VAM was a sole NGC 53 VAM 4 EDS 1882 o/s. This is one of the rarest Top 100 Morgans, on par in rarity with the 1878 8TF VAM 14-11, with probably less than ten specimens known. I recently looked at two certified examples that were misattributed as EDS, and another about a year ago, so the minuscule population of this variety is actually inflated.

I found a single example of the 1878 7/5 TF VAM 44, the King of Morgan dollar varieties, that graded NGC XF45. And, a sole 1878 7/3 VAM 32 that graded NGC 40. Also found was an NGC MS 62 1887 o VAM 22 pitted reverse and an NGC 62 1899 o micro o, better varieties in relatively high grade. Of special note is an 1880 VAM 1A Knobbed 8 in NGC 58, an 1878 7TF VAM 199.1 Tripled Blossoms in NGC 55, a sole 1883 VAM 10 Sextupled Stars in NGC 53, a sole 1880 VAM 23 80/79 overdate in NGC 50, a sole 1880 o VAM 6B 8/7 Overdate/Hangnail Eagle in NGC 50, an 1888 o VAM 4 Hotlips in NGC 50, and an 1887 VAM 1A Donkey Tail in XF 40.

The most significant Hot 50 finds were an 1886 VAM 20 Doubled Date in NGC 61 and an 1881 o VAM 27 Doubled Ear in NGC 58.

A lot of information can be gleamed from the data. Of approximately 35,000 mostly circulated Morgan dollars examined in my 9 days of searching, one can safely conclude that the truly rare (R6 and better) Morgan dollars are simply... well hard to find and will likely remain so in the future. What wasn't found is equally as important as what was found. I searched through an original BU bag of 1878 8TFs and found many VAM 6, VAM 7, and VAM 1's (mostly PL/DMPL), but not one ultra rarity. There were no 1878 s B1 reverses, but lots of 1878 s dollars. A sole 1878 s VAM 22 was found in very low grade, but it was a bent "no grade" by NGC. There was no 1880 VAM 7 or VAM 8; no 1888 o VAM 1A "E Reverse" or VAM 1B Scarface. There was no 1901 VAM 3 DDR, or 1903 s VAM 2 micro s varieties, and no 1902 VAM 4 Doubled Ear or 1921 D VAM 1A TRU-T varieties. Most of the Carson City and better date Morgans were pulled by tellers at the Horseshoe Casino prior to the 1980's.

Overall, this will be a tremendous opportunity for collectors of VAMs and other Silver Dollar varieties. As well, this will be the absolute last time you can find Binion Silver Dollars at auction, fresh from the original hoard! All 600+ of the Binion VAMs will be on view at the New Silver Dollar Show in St. Louis in October 17-19th or by private appointment.
